TIME published a photograph of Democratic candidate for Vice President R. Sargent Shriver as he gestured to a crowd at Temple in 1972. Shriver, the American politician, activist and Kennedy brother-in-law, died on January 18 in his homestate of Maryland; he was 95. He was married to J.F.K.'s sister Eunice and was perhaps best known for his ties to the Kennedy family, a relationship that both afflicted and promoted his political career.
