Monika Williams Shealey named dean of the College of Education and Human Development

Dear colleagues,

I am excited to share that Monika Williams Shealey has been appointed to be the dean of the College of Education and Human Development. Following the national search, Monika will begin at Temple on July 1, 2023.

Monika has served in leadership roles for the last decade at Rowan University, most recently as senior vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion and prior to that as dean and professor in Rowan's College of Education. In both positions, she has been a strong advocate for building bridges and developing strong, collaborative relationships. She has served in the president’s cabinet offering strategic guidance about the university with an emphasis on fiscal accountability, academic affairs and student success. While a dean, she led strategic planning and implementation focused on creating a more equitable and inclusive community; recruiting and retaining diverse students and faculty; and promoting and supporting inclusive scholarship. Her research interests include examining the intersection of urban and special education, experiences of traditionally marginalized groups in teacher and special education, and culturally responsive practices in special education. Prior to her time at Rowan, she was an associate dean and associate professor at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.

I am inspired by her leadership philosophy, which is guided by her core values of collaboration, empathy and commitment to justice. She is an experienced and student-centered leader who emphasizes that students are at the heart of her decision to work in education. She is deeply committed to advancing education for all learners. Learn more about Monika.

I want to thank the search committee for their dedication to this important appointment. Monika is an extraordinary leader, and I look forward to the meaningful impact she will have here in our Temple community. Please join me in welcoming Monika to Temple University.

Sincerely,
