11 Things to Do in November

<p><span id="docs-internal-guid-b7a22492-c923-9849-3a92-1722434cb9b2"><span style="font-size: 14.6667px; font-family: Arial; white-space: pre-wrap; background-color: transparent;">It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s...November? When did that happen? (On Nov. 1, apparently.) Anyway, we’ve made you a list of 11 things to do this month.</span></span></p>

Orange and yellow autumn leaves

1. Get happy. And rich.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, workers with a graduate degree earn nearly 30 percent more than those with a bachelor’s. They’re also happier, according to the World Happiness Report (we didn’t make that up; it’s an actual report and that’s its actual name). These are just two of the very good reasons to check out Grad School Week, which includes events like Grad School 101, where you can learn about the admissions process, and the Graduate & Professional School Fair.

Nov. 2–5, various times and locations; details.

2. Take a deep breath.
Panicked about that paper? The Writing Center and Temple University Libraries are collaborating to help you out. From creating citations to clarifying prose, they’ll give you the support you need to get ’er done. They will also advise you strongly against using the phrase “get ’er done” in anything you turn in.
Mondays through Thursdays, Nov. 2–19, see website for hours (drop in and by appointment), Think Tank, First Floor, Paley Library.

3. Leave on a jet plane.
Or learn more about Study Abroad, and then leave on a jet plane. From Paris to Beijing and many an intriguing location in between, the fall Study Abroad Fair includes information about semester and summer study-away programs and how to pay for them.
Wednesday, Nov. 4, 10 a.m.–2 p.m., Lobby, Tuttleman Learning Center.

4. Get animated.
Meet the guy who helped animate movies like Cars and Ratatouille and Brave. Animator and Character Director Matt Nolte will offer a look at The Good Dinosaur, Disney*Pixar’s latest, which opens at the end of the month. Nolte’s job is to design the film’s characters, taking them from an image on paper to a 3-D model on a computer to the movie screen you stare at while shoving popcorn in your mouth. Learn how he does it at this behind-the-scenes presentation.
Thursday, Nov. 5, 10 a.m., Architecture 104.

5. Crawl through Old City.
Or, being Owls, fly, if you wish. But first get on the bus. Tyler School of Art is providing free transportation to the First Friday Art Crawl in Old City, where you can check out more than 40 open art galleries. If the photography, paintings, textiles and sculpture aren’t enough of a draw, keep in mind that there will most likely be free cheese for the eating.
Friday, Nov. 6, bus departs from 13th and Diamond streets at 6 p.m. and leaves from the Betsy Ross House on Arch Street between 2nd and 3rd at 8:45 p.m.

6. Go to the movies in an actual theater and chill.
It turns out you Owls are a creative bunch. A creative flock? A creative parliament. A bunch of owls is called a parliament! Wow. Anyway, as we were saying, you Owls are a creative parliament. Who have made and produced some actual movies. Check out a series of shorts made by TFMA students at Center City’s Roxy Theater. Then chill.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7:30 p.m., Roxy Theater, 2023 Sansom St.

7. Call it a night.
Reviewers have called A Free Man of Color a “masterpiece,” a “fever dream of a play” and a “hearty, spicy theatrical gumbo of wild colors and tempting flavors.” We are calling it an evening well spent. Check out Temple Theater’s new production, which is part history lesson, part sex farce and 100 percent worth the price of admission (just $10 for students!).
Wednesday, Nov. 11–Saturday, Nov. 21, various dates and times, Randall Theater.

8. Go for a cruise.
There will be food. There will be music. There will be dancing. On a boat. Get dressed up (boats are fancy) and spend the night cruising down the Delaware River. The Ambler Campus Program Board has planned it all, including a bus that will whisk you to the river from either Ambler or Main campus. We’re hoping T-Pain will make a guest appearance.
Friday, Nov. 13, 8–11:30 p.m., bus leaves the Ambler Campus Student Parking Lot at 7 p.m. and will pick up students at Main Campus at 7:30 p.m. at the Howard Gittis Student Center; check in at the Spirit of Philadelphia, 401 S. Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia, at 8 p.m., board at 8 p.m.

9. Get loud.
If you’ve missed them at football games and pep rallies, on national TV and (naked) in major Hollywood movies, you can check out Temple’s own Diamond Marching Band at an indoor concert this month. If we’re lucky perhaps they’ll play “Trap Queen.” Seriously, though, this is not your grandmother’s marching band.
Saturday, Nov. 14, 4 p.m., Lew Klein Hall, Temple Performing Arts Center.

10. Wear white after Labor Day.
Volley ball fans are actually a little crazy, which makes volley ball games crazy fun, which means spending a Friday night wearing all white at the team’s annual white-out game against Central Florida is a very, very good idea.
Friday, Nov. 16, 6 p.m., McGonigle Hall.

11. Don’t pay to play.
It’s called Monday Madness for a reason. BECAUSE IT’S MADNESS. Free games at the Game Room all. day. long. Pool, foose ball...shuffleboard? We told you it was madness.
Monday, Nov. 30, 11 a.m.-11:30 p.m., Game Room, Howard Gittis Student Center.
