Recent studies show there's an increase in injuries to young children under the age of five because too many parents are distracted by devices and they're not paying attention to their kids. According to Kathy Hirsh-Pasek, professor of psychology at Temple, most people can't focus on two things at once. "We convince ourselves in this new world order that we are somehow able to just process so many things at once, and what we are learning about the human brain is that it just ain't so," she said.

It's been a bad month for Japanese conservative politicians who can't seem to resist the temptation to rewrite history and make provocative gestures while shifting and minimizing war responsibility, said Jeff Kingston, director of Asian Studies, Temple University, Japan campus, in an opinion piece. “Japan's recalcitrant conservatives are playing with fire and surely Abe recalls that when he was hounded from office in 2007 the denouement began when he tried to revise history,” he said.

Graduates wearing their caps and gowns don’t have much freedom when it comes to style. But in her eight years as a Temple University photographer, Betsy Manning discovered that students have been finding ways to express their individuality below the hemline — with shoes. Manning documented the parade of shoes at this year’s Commencement by setting up a miniature red carpet on the loading dock at Temple’s Liacouras Center. Her shots captured all types of footwear, from glittering wedges to dress shoes emblazoned with a white “T” on one foot and a red “U” on the other.

National Public Radio

If you're old enough to drive, are you old enough to vote? You soon will be if you live in Takoma Park, Md. The Washington suburb has extended voting rights in municipal elections to 16 and 17-year-olds. Voting is something younger teenagers should be able to handle, says Temple psychologist Laurence Steinberg, an expert in adolescent brain development. "Adolescents are probably just as good as adults at really taking information and making a logical decision about it," he said. "That doesn't mean they'll always do it logically, but neither do adults."
