Frank Farley of Temple's College of Education, who was not associated with the study, thinks the findings provide interesting information about how self-knowledge impacts people. “[The study is] provocative to say the least,” Farley said. “It also points to how important self-understanding and the self- knowledge are.”

Temple researchers look to curb weight gain among group home residents

Several studies show higher rates of obesity among those with intellectual disabilities compared with other Americans. In Central Pennsylvania, researchers from Temple's Center for Obesity Research and Education are working in group homes to help people with developmental disabilities find solutions to their struggles with obesity. The researchers say weight is a problem, in particular, for people who live in group homes versus institutional settings, perhaps because greater independent living brings greater food temptations.

Temple men's basketball ranked 18th most successful program of last 50 years

Using a points system devised by ESPN's Stats and Information Department, ESPN has been counting down the 50 most successful basketball programs of the last half century. Temple men's basketball came in at number 18. Temple "accumulated the ninth-most points (197) from 1984-2001. The eight teams ahead of the Owls in that period all won a national title," wrote ESPN.com columnists. The Owls "reached five Elite Eights from 1988-2001 and 17 of 18 NCAA tournaments from 1984-2001 (missed in 1989)."

What worries small business owners? Not knowing

Uncertainty about the effects of health care legislation is a leading source of anxiety among small business owners, wrote William Dunkelberg, emeritus professor of economics at Temple, in a guest column. "The health care legislation passed by the Democrats is in place and will be more fully implemented in the next two years," Dunkelberg wrote. "It contains over 20 new taxes and leaves the writing of much of the regulator detail to the Secretary of HHS. It will take a lot of effort just to become aware of all the applicable regulations much less complying with them."

Japan and China face off over disputed islands

A dispute between China and Japan over islands in the South China Sea parallels similar territorial rows between China and its Southeast Asian neighbors that have sparked concerns about China's growing naval reach. "On a rational basis, both sides have a lot to lose if this escalates. On the other hand, both have something to lose if they don't appear strong and assertive," said Jeffrey Kingston of Temple University, Japan Campus. "I think the ball is in China's court….My guess is that they want to put a cap on it. Whether they can do so is another matter."

Student activists focusing on youth vote

Among those working hard to mobilize and register young voters was Sonia Galiber, a student in Temple's College of Liberal Arts. "A lot of them, this is their first election, they're coming into college, it's their freshman year,” said Galiber.
