Recent Temple grad documents aftermath of Oklahoma tornado

Just days after completing his Master of Arts degree in media studies and production, Gino Canella found himself documenting the devastating aftermath of the tornado that struck the Moore, Okla., area on May 20. Canella, who is working on contract with the Weather Channel, filed stories on recovery efforts by the First Response Team of America, which is providing equipment and support in the wake of the disaster.

Kraft named deputy athletic director at Temple

Pat Kraft, senior associate athletics director at Loyola University Chicago, has been named Temple’s deputy athletic director. Kraft came to Loyola after working on the senior athletic staff at Indiana University, where he was responsible for branding and marketing efforts. “I witnessed firsthand his efforts in branding and marketing Indiana athletics as we served together on IU’s athletics senior staff,” said Temple interim athletics director Kevin Clark.

Rescued Civil War statue gets new life

In 1970, “Silent Sentinel,” a statue of a Civil War soldier that once stood guard at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Yeadon, was pulled it from its granite base by thieves. After decades in hiding, the restored statue is being moved to Philadelphia’s Laurel Hill Cemetery. In its new location, the statue “will add a new dimension to the Civil War and arts collection of the city," said Andy Waskie, a Temple instructor and author of Philadelphia and the Civil War: Arsenal of the Union.

Target and Facebook launch Cartwheel savings feature

Target has launched Cartwheel, a Facebook app that allows shoppers to search for savings, buy items and share deals with friends. Coupons are condensed to a single barcode that can be printed out or scanned from a smartphone. “The benefit from a technology standpoint is that you don't have to carry around paper with you. You don't have to look through the circulars,” said David Schuff, an associate professor of management information systems at Temple's Fox School of Business.

Student op-ed in The Atlantic: the conservative case for immigration reform

The new edition of “Psychiatry’s Bible” — the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, known as DSM-5 — is being released this month amid great controversy, with many in the field questioning whether psychiatry’s main diagnostic guide needs an overhaul, or to be completely abandoned. Frank Farley of Temple’s College of Education, a former president of the American Psychological Association, joined a panel of experts for a Google+ hangout hosted by Science magazine.
